Get Involved!
The list, below, offers a variety of ways volunteers can join with the Council on Aging in assisting older residents of Buncombe County.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, call Volunteer Coordinator Joan Maxcy at 828-277-8288 or email her at joanm@coabc.org THANK YOU FOR CARING!
- Call A Ride - We use volunteers to transport older adults who can no longer drive and cannot use public transportation to medical and other necessary appointments. This is the program with the most critical, ongoing need.
- Homebound Food Delivery - Volunteers
pick up prepackaged food, donated by Manna food bank, boxed by
Salvation Army and deliver once a month to homebound elderly.
- Senior's Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) - Volunteers are trained to provide seniors with accurate information about Medicare and other insurance issues through individual counseling.
- Friendly Visitors / Telephone Reassurance -Many older persons who are living alone need some kind of "loneliness intervention" - if you like to visit, this may be for you.
- Peer Counseling - Volunteers, age 55+, are trained by professional counselors to help older adults struggling with depression, anxiety and loneliness.
- Information & Assistance Volunteers - The Council sometimes needs help answering phones, "stuffing envelopes," or applying mailing labels to newsletters, etc.
- Lawn & Garden help - many seniors are no longer able to do routine lawn care, mowing, raking, gutter work, as well as minor projects around the house. If you like outdoor work, this is for you.
- Quality Assurance Surveys - The Council routinely telephones service recipients to evaluate program satisfaction. This is usually done quarterly.
All volunteers must complete an application and a background check. If you don't see something here that "suits your fancy" - talk to Joan about other ideas.
