Seniors Safe At Home (S.S.A.H)
A variety of services operated by the Council to assist older adults with access to services that can help them remain independent as long as possible.
Seniors Safe at Home Includes:
CALL A RIDETransportation for older adults unable to use public transit systems or drive their own cars. Call a Ride utilizes volunteers with private vehicles to transport eligible clients to necessary appointments. Requires 5 day notice. Mileage reimbursement is available to volunteers. MINOR HOME REPAIR & YARD MAINTENANCEVolunteers and the Council's 'handy man' provide basic home repair projects not provided by other agencies. HEAT RELIEFDistribution of heat relief services (fans and air conditioners) is available during summer months. Funds are made available to the Council from Progress Energy, via the Land of Sky Regional Council. Also, electric heaters are available for loan for emergency needs during winter months. 911 EMERGENCY CELL PHONE PLACEMENTDonated cell phones preset for 911 dialing provided for eligible at-risk older adults. COA accepts donations of working cell phones with home chargers. PERSONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE UNITSPlacement and subsidization of Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) for low-income at-risk elderly SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION PROGRAM (SHIIP)Volunteer counselors trained in Medicare, Medicare Part D and supplements Insurance provide one-on-one assistance with Medicare questions and concerns; in cooperation with the NC State Department of Insurance. |
